As a journalist who covers politics I hardly get to have any fun. I keep telling myself I’ll start writing about food or do film reviews, but when it comes down to what inspires me to sit down and write are the issues that are plaguing the world.
I’ve never been worried or concerned with being the first to write about something. I find that a lot of political analysis is just surface level driven by everyone wanting to be first with “the take.” I prefer to let the dust settle and read what others' analyses are and see if it’s missing anything and if I have anything worth contributing. Although I enjoy writing, I try not to publish for the sake of publishing. If I’m sharing it with you all, trust it’s because I feel it’s something that needs to be read.
I decided to name my newsletter Go deeper because I plan on doing just that. I believe in questioning and deconstructing our own beliefs and ideologies. In my writing I don’t see the field as simply left or right, nor Democrats or Republicans. I understand that there are several layers of political oppression that include class, race, gender, colonialism and speciesism. It is this perspective that allows me to write from a greater depth and it is in Go deeper that I hope to provoke others to do the same.
